Solar-powered Clean Water Systems

TOOLKIT / TOOLS / TECHNOLOGIES FOR RESILIENCE / Clean Water Systems
The Ateneo Innovation Center (AIC) deployed more than 140 units of the Ateneo Clean Water System (ACWS) to remote and disaster-stricken areas in the Philippines. ACWS was an integration of technologies with the following components β rain catcher, mechanical filters and UV irradiation, solar panels, charge converters, LED lights, inverter, and car battery. The first prototype was bulky, expensive, and had less installation flexibility. It evolved into a portable, more affordable and with more installation flexibility for customization.
Collaboration with sponsors, partnership with communities and contribution of students provided the needed resources to continually improve the system and make it more efficient and effective in addressing diverse needs. The series of installations, faced with challenges, inspired ingenuity and passion to make further innovations. Pre-deployment and post-deployment processes also evolved from an individualistic to a more collaborative approach. While the AIC is conducting studies to lower the cost of ACWS and make its power storage more durable, there is still more work to be done in making communities realize its value as pre-positioned assets for disaster preparedness and community resilience.

University-Community Partnership for Water Technology Deployment and Co-innovation: A Decade of Engagement | Cabacungan, P., Tangonan G., and Cabacungan, N. 2020.
The Ateneo de Manila University developed the Water-Electricity-Lighting System (WELS), a portable technology providing clean water, lighting, and phone charging, whose decade-long deployment demonstrates how university-community collaboration fosters technology improvement, sustainability, disaster resilience, and community empowerment through co-innovation and hands-on training.
Water-Electricity-Light System: Technology Innovations. Journal of Disaster Research | Cabacungan, P., Tangonan G., and Cabacungan, N. 2020.
This paper discusses the evolution of the Water-Electricity-Light System (WELS) into a cost-effective, customizable solution that provides clean water, lighting, and cellphone charging, highlighting lessons from over 140 installations across the Philippines and advocating its pre-positioning in communities to strengthen disaster resilience.
From Disaster Preparedness to Technology Driven Disaster Resilience: Installation of Clean Water System – Barangay San Andres, Cainta, Rizal | Tandoc, E. 2020.
This study examines the introduction of a technology-based resilience innovation by the Ateneo Innovation Center in Barangay San Andres, a highly vulnerable community in Cainta, while assessing the municipalityβs clean water situation through household water testing across its barangays to support local resilience planning.
