CCARPH Co-Principal Investigator Ms. Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga (President of the National Resilience Council) presented in the webinar entitled, “Dealing with Disasters Fast and Slow: Health System Resilience for COVID-19 and Climate Change,” held on December 14, 8:00 PM (Philippine Time). This event is part of the webinar series of the Prince Mahidol Award Conference (PMAC) 2021.

Ms. Loyzaga’s lecture, “Climate Change and COVID-19: Challenges for the Philippines” gave light to CCARPH’s efforts with the National Resilience Council (NRC), specifically the Web-based Geospatial and Temporal Risk Database System, and the Climate and Disaster Risk assessment (featuring Iloilo City). She also gave light to the importance of transdisciplinary research, and engagement of the private sector, in the field of climate change and disaster risk reduction.

This is a whole-of-society effort. There are no one or two sectors just taking the lead—this must be a whole-of-society [effort]. The special roles of academia today, in terms of moving science to action, and looking at transdisciplinary work…the kind of work that involves practitioners [and] communities, is needed to understand where risk actually begins: Locally—[that] is where we should be looking at in terms of bringing people together. Finally, the role of the private sector: It is time for the private sector to not just be a donor. It is time for the private sector to be a co-implementer, with the local and the national government, as well as the civil society. The only way they can do that is to embed risk reduction to the core business value cycles, and not make it an option for corporate social responsibility. It must be embedded in order for it to make a difference in terms of climate change and disaster risk reduction.
