CCARPH scientists and partners were featured in the webinar entitled, “Understanding Flooding in Iloilo City,” Session 1 of the Reducing Iloilo’s Risks of Flooding: A Webinar Series hosted by the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), the Iloilo City Government, and the Iloilo Provincial Government.
Dr. Gay Defiesta (UPV/CCARPH), Ms. Jessica Dator-Bercilla (UPV/CCARPH), and Dr. Francia Avilla (Manila Observatory / CCARPH) were guest lecturers alongside Dr. Mahar Lagmay (UP Resilience Institute), and Dr. Fernando Siringan (UP Marine Science Institute).
Dr. Avilla’s presentation entitled, “Extreme weather, Climate Change, and Flooding in Iloilo” featured climate projections of Iloilo City, results from the work of CCARPH. Her lecture was followed by Dr. Defiesta and Ms. Dator-Bercilla’s two-part discussion entitled, “Flooding and Social Vulnerabilities in Iloilo City.” Dr. Defiesta presented findings from their social vulnerability analysis which is part of the overall climate and disaster risk assessment (CDRA) for the city, made in partnership with UPV, the Manila Observatory, UPV, Iloilo City Planning & Development Office, and CCARPH / Ateneo de Manila University. Prof. Dator-Bercilla summarized the session by highlighting engagement of communities, alternative & supplemental livelihoods, updating city plans to further include risk assessment, and enhancing alternative access to clean water.
